Las Vegas History & Culture

Las Vegas was discovered by the Mexican merchant Antonio Armijo in 1829 and named it as Las Vegas which means the meadows in Spanish. The land which is now known as Las Vegas was a marsh of abundant water and vegetation, but over the period of time the river dripped into the ground and the marsh got receded. It became the place what we known as the fun and exciting city of Las Vegas.

In 1902, the land was sold to a railroad company and the downtown area was subdivided. In 15th May 1905, which is celebrated as the birth day of the city, 1200 lots were sold. Las Vegas is situated on the deserted land of Clark County which is surrounded by the desert vegetation and wildlife.

The population of the Las Vegas is around 1,865,746 according to the 2008 census and it is considered as the fastest growing area of the United States with the largest number of fresh residents.

The tourism has contributed heavily to the economy of Las Vegas along with gaming and conventions which in turn help the retail and dining industries to grow.
